An endless journey

My relationship to and with dance.»

Music and dance have always been a part of my life. For me, there is no deeper or more natural way to express myself than through music and movement. Since I was very young, Arabic music and instruments entered my life to captivate me, and I felt completely drawn to their vibe. I was always dancing and obsessed with sports and music (I played the drums in a band), but the arrival of oriental dance was like a whirlwind, and I knew that it was something I would always be passionate about. As a curiosity and personal anecdote, it was my first teacher, «Eva de la Zambra,» who invited me to attend her classes at a party. I wasn’t very convinced at the time, but today I am eternally grateful to her.»

Oriental dance or «raks sharki» has its origins or cradle in Egypt and is a fascinating dance that unfortunately carries many stigmas and little artistic recognition worldwide. Especially the Egyptian government does not do much to promote it and even puts obstacles in its way. But with my work and that of many other professionals, we continue working and creating so that someday this music and dance will be recognized.

Karioca underwent specific training to become a teacher of Oriental dance under Federica Masi from 2011 to 2012. During this time, the focus was on anatomy, body posture, rhythms of Arabic music, and, most importantly, how to convey this knowledge according to the students’ level. In the training section, you can read more about Karioca’s education.

Living in different countries, Karioca hasn’t always been able to balance the life of performances with that of a teacher, but her passion for teaching is as strong as, if not stronger than, performing.
